Spectacle Lenses

For most of us choosing a new pair of spectacles means choosing a new pair of frames and we don’t consider what lenses to put in them. Just like choosing a car, there are many types of lenses which offer different levels of performance from the latest technological developments with tailor made options for the best possible vision. We pride ourselves on recommending the best lenses available so you get the best choice to suite your needs.
Your lenses can be enhanced with the following options:
Thin & Light lenses
We recommend Thin & Light lenses to give you the best looking and most comfortable glasses possible. Lenses can be made of various materials of varying weight and thickness – the overall result depends on the density of the lens material as well as your personal prescription. As a general rule, if you are long sighted your lenses are thickest in the middle, and the opposite is true if you are short-sighted (the lenses are thickest at the edges).
Thin & Light lenses reduce the overall thickness of your lenses, giving them a lighter feel and improving appearance. All come with super easy-clean surfaces that last longer, and are anti-reflection for clear vision without distractions.
Anti-reflective coating
The curved surface of glasses lenses, along with the materials they are made from, cause reflections. In fact, you can lose around 10% of light through reflections on lenses. These reflections can be distracting and appear unattractive. An anti-reflective coating allows for clearer vision by reducing reflections, allowing 99.8% of the light through the lens and ensuring distractions to your vision are minimal. Your glasses’ appearance is also improved, as others can see your eyes rather than reflections of light. See the difference with our anti-reflection demonstration. All our anti-reflection lenses include the latest technological development – a super-hydrophobic coating, which can now make your lenses resistant to condensation, water-repellent and easier to clean.
Scratch resistant coating
Scratch resistant lenses provide protection from everyday accidental damage. The hard coating prolongs the life of the lens, whilst simultaneously providing clearer vision. All of our lenses include a scratch resistant coating as standard.
Lens options
Single vision
Single vision lenses have one single prescription across their entire surface and are suitable in all scenarios, whether you need your glasses for driving, working or reading.
Varifocals
Eyes change throughout our lives, gradually losing the ability to focus on close objects. During our mid-forties, the lenses in our eyes become stiffer, and the muscles that control them change – which eventually causes blurred vision. This is called Presbyopia, and it happens to all of us. You’ll probably find yourself holding books, newspapers or product labels further away, or needing more light in order to read clearly.
If you are experiencing the symptoms of Presbyopia, there are three lens options:
Reading: good for near vision only. If you look up at a computer screen or across a room, your vision will blur while wearing glasses.
Bifocal: an older option wherein the lens is divided into two distinct sections for near and distance, but provides no correction for mid distance.
Varifocal or Progressive : ideal for all distances, as the lens corrects near, distance and in-between vision.
We recommend varifocal lenses for:
The convenience of having natural vision at all distances in one pair of glasses. Great cosmetic appearance with no visible line on the lens, unlike bifocal lenses.
30-day guarantee
Don’t worry if you’ve never tried varifocal lenses before. Our optometrist is at hand to give you expert advice on which lenses to choose and how to get the most from them. As a final reassurance, if at any time within 30 days you are not comfortable with your new varifocal lenses, we will exchange them to the same value for more suitable lenses. Even varifocal lenses cannot offer 100% clear vision – there will be areas of the lenses through which you will see softer focus. The lenses you choose can determine the amount of soft-focus area you experience. A tailor-made lens will enable you to minimize this effect
Bifocals
A bifocal lens provides distance and near vision in one lens. The near vision correction of the lens is contained in a segment, often visible on the front of the lens. This segment provides the extra power necessary for you to read clearly. Bifocals may still leave a gap for mid-distance vision; and, as a line dividing the lens is visible, some customers feel bifocals are not as cosmetically appealing.
Reading glasses
At The Eye Makers we will recommend the best option for you. For reading, this could be single vision lenses dedicated to your needs – or you may be looking for a quick solution to keep handy by using Ready Readers. We have a full range in our accessories section in store. Ready Readers are an ideal accompaniment to prescription glasses. Fitted with simple magnifying lenses, Ready Readers do not act as correction lenses, but are useful for everyday reading around the home. Regular eye check-ups are still necessary to determine your eye health status and vision needs.
